COMPILATION 2008 - BRISBANE Entirely MADE & OWNED (71:33 min.)

BRISMETAL.COM RECORDS / AUSTRALIA-IMPORT

Again and again appear in the scene compilations that are out of
love for homeland and a deep enthusiasm to create and the music scene
of the city, region or country should represent. With this title it is
not hard to guess that with this CD 12 (unsigned) of the metal bands
situated in the northeastern Australian city of Brisbane present. To
anticipate: 1824 as a penal colony was founded, now with just under 1.9
million residents in Greater Brisbane and registered only a few
kilometers from the holiday paradises Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast,
has the modern Brisbane apparently a penchant for extreme metal bands.
But at a time:
1. VIOLENT GREEN, a relatively short existing Force (since
2007), the Sludge Metal with Death Metal mix. Due to the frenzied
guitar sounds all very fixed, the mix itself, however, is not exactly
my favorite. http://www.myspace.com/theviolentgreen
2. Bonesaw: The name says it. Even though the squad his own
style as a mix of sales, he is still mainly of Death Metal. Harsh
sound, sirrende guitars and a deep voice and Raunz-finished "Murder Is
The Game". http://www.myspace.com/bonesawdeathmetal
3. Phalanx can be the first surprise on the face of the
reviewers recognize. The Onslaught Death Metal mixed with Doom in
progressive structures and even some World Music flows into the
combination. Even if the latter is something a lot of the good and the
track are overloaded, then let Phalanx riffing on the highest level,
atmosphere, cool keyboard melodies and a matching dark vocal sounds.
Coole Sache! http://www.myspace.com/phalanxofficial
4. DEAD LETTER OPENER seem a little extreme in their progressive
metal to dissipate. From the class of a band like Opeth, there is
certainly still far away and, unfortunately, is "What's Yours And Mine"
zerfahren therefore something, but on the whole promising. For a final
evaluation is only one song but definitely not enough.
http://www.deadletteropener.com
5. IT COME FROM whence starts very timid and playful, but then
proposes confused sound collages with corrosive clamor around. Sorry,
but this Doom-brew with-Drone deposits is musically just not my thing.
http://www.myspace.com/fromwhenceitcome
6. SKYPI present us with "Lucifer's Dreambox" an experimental
rock, the jerky starts and later with hypnotic repetition - only just
instrumental, vocal then technically - works. Overall, getting used to,
but quite interesting. http://www.myspace.com/skypimusic
7. SEDITION is next. These already existing since 1999 Combo has
just her second full length iron in self-released and is the first
contribution for fans of traditional heavy metal. "Blessed Are The
Blind" contains good, pleasing melodies, fine guitar playing and nice,
though not outstanding vocals. Thumbs Up! http://www.sedition.com.au
8. BORN FROM THE ASHES, the support on the Black Crusade
(Machine Head / Trivium / Arch Enemy) had played a kind of dynamic,
modern death metal with choppy vocals and furious, though wooden
sounding, drums. Also contains "Breakaway" an exceptional
(instrumental) Intermezzo. http://www.myspace.com/ashesproject
9. 308 bring quite a cool blend of Thrashing Black Metal, which
is why they are already in the act of Gospel Of The Horns were allowed
to play. "Baptised In Bullets" is waiting with a growing and
start-Kreischberg genuine scream vocals on.
http://www.myspace.com/308thenumber
10. SAKKUTH are once again serving older combo. Their
forthcoming album (on Systematic Records) is the third attack of its
Melodic Death Metal. The thrashige, brutal sound is done. Definitely
one of the better songs! http://www.myspace.com/sakkuth
11. DEFAMERs mix of Black and Death Metal acts in the play "The
Black Obscene" as a sort of "Blackened Chaos" with howling guitar runs.
http://www.myspace.com/defamermetal
12. With information on MOON keeps you covered in the booklet,
but "Apparition III" proves that atmospheric Black Metal in the
subtropical climate Northeast Australia thrives. Fine!
http://www.myspace.com/Moonmyth
Although some of these samplers average product and includes
only a few highlights, so it offers a good overview of Brisbane's metal
scene and is therefore a very interesting acquisition. If you are
interested in a specific genre, so just contacted one of the bands. The

Rave Magazine's Ash Jones talks to Scott McIvor

by sakkuth, posted 01/03/09 09:32:36   » Music

“Hide the beer from (vocalist) Moises or we’ll be thirsty,” is the last piece of advice SCOTT McIVOR gives ASH JONES, but you’ll have to read a lot farther to see what else SAKKUTH consider pertinent…

“Sakkuth – The demon that brought forward the dark ages after
the city of Atlantis was destroyed,” says McIvor, bringing me up to
speed on the origins of the melodic death metal locals’ name. So,
moving from myth to establishing the place of this band in Brisbane’s
own 21st century dark ages, Sakkuth are the quintet who you masterful
tracks like Suffering Dead and Rebirth on their new album From Wretched
Blood. It’s a record that will be remembered by McIvor as more than an
album marking the band’s tenth year together, a feat they achieved with
relatively few line-up changes. He insists, “I personally enjoy this
album the most, regardless of us being together for ten years. With
that being said we’ve all become closer friends over this time and gone
through good and bad experiences together, which makes the end sweeter.”

Experience is not an aspect Sakkuth have to work hard to grasp. In
their first decade they have conquered over 400 shows, and played
alongside bands like Infernal Method, Daysend, and D-nine, in
particular. 2008 however, has been a very memorable year for Australian
metal releases. While discussing the year’s highlights, McIvor manages
to backtrack me to 2007 and then the invariable present, by saying,
“Daysend’s The Warning from last year I thought was amazing. Rumours of
Scott Edgar and Anthony Dwyer [ex-Misery players] forming a new band is
also exciting.” Unfortunately I’m not in a position to validate any
rumours, but I can relate to the isolation he prefers to write in. The
guitarist says, “To be honest I try not to worry about what other
people are doing. For me I lock myself in a room, drink beer and write
songs. As a band we all have our say on the songs. I try not to listen
to other CDs while writing a song so it doesn’t get influenced.” What
writer hasn’t found themselves subconsciously mimicking the voice of a
persuasive, and timeless author, and achieving only a lesser outcome?
Obviously it follows suit for musicians absorbing the prototypes before
them.

No cause for alarm though, as From Wretched Blood is a creditable
effort, utilising pace and structure in a way that makes the melodious
side of Sakkuth devastating in effect. McIvor agrees, “I think we’ve
refined the way we go about bringing aggression into songs and we
understand when to back off and build again.” It’s this strengthened
songwriting that will translate Sakkuth’s new compositions when the
band plays Rosie’s with State Of Integrity, Anno Domini, and Bonesaw:
bands with substantial interest in using concentrated musical force to
serve our auditory interests. “With metal it’s always good to warm up,”
the axe slinger warns. “You don’t want to cramp up half way through the
first lead. This will be the first gig since the new album has been
released so people will know the songs. It will be an awesome night.”

SAKKUTH, State Of Integrity, Anno Domini and Bonesaw play
Rosie’s on Friday Nov 14. FROM WRETCHED BLOOD is out now through
Systematic. www.myspace.com/sakkuth

SAKKUTH
From Wretched Blood
(Systematic)
7.5/10

Having toured with Opeth, Strapping Young Lad and Nevermore, to name a few, Sakkuth are now one of Australia's most prominent death metal bands. This release will only project them further up the metal hierarchy. Opening track ‘Murderous Intent’ gets straight to the point with its pure metal onslaught. With the interesting combination of Barney Greenaway (Napalm Death) style vocals and melodic riffing that takes you back to At the Gates, you can’t go wrong. Covering all bases, from insane solos (‘Torment of the Body and Soul’) through to the heaviest of breakdowns (‘As I Went Below’), Sakkuth are in fine form on ‘From Wretched Blood’ and I look forward to their next release (Matt).
